Then there is the scenario
Despite flagging out and the lack of commercial competence, it often happens that shipowners leave their ship in port somewhere in the world.
They unscrupulously accept that seafarers remain on board without provisions and with outstanding wages (usually for several months). No chance to start your journey home and/or to hire elsewhere because the shipowner has not handed over the working papers and documents.
This usually happens out of greed and implementing a lack of strength of character and lack of respect, as well as a lack of a sense of responsibility.
And these are not isolated cases!
Such a thing arises because a large number of shipping companies worldwide make use of another possibility of flagging out (that under the so-called “cheap flags” or “flags of convenience” ) in order to save money. Normally, the shipowner’s ships fly the flag of their home country. It indicates that the law of your home country applies on the ship. A different right applies to flagging out and flying another (fair) flag.
The reason for this is:
The fact that personnel costs, for example in the case of container and tanker ships and cruise ships, account for 42 percent of the operating costs of local shipowners, so considerable savings can be achieved here in particular.
It can happen that there are no collective agreements and no controls, and this has led to unpaid and/or reduced social and pension contributions, etc., so that no entitlement, or only a reduced percentage, is due to the seafarers. Which ultimately contributes to seafarers being destitute after their sea voyage.
Through no fault of your own, wives, family members and/or widows are also involved at the same time.
For these reasons, the Charité Maritime is committed to providing the necessary and urgently needed living expenses on a monthly basis.
This includes destitute seafarers and their families, widows and orphans who live elsewhere and also do not claim housing in one of the 14 locations.
Furthermore, the Charité Maritime covers the travel costs for trainees, interns and students and the costs for the necessary certificates, so that you can complete your internship without any worries.
With your donation you help where money is most urgently needed. Thank you for supporting the work of Charité Maritime !
